Sonographic Findings of Thyroid Nodule

Abstract
Ultrasonographic findings of 141 cases of thyroid nodule confirmed by operation or needle aspiration biopsy were analysed. The purpose of this study was detection of sonographic findings of thyroid nodule helpful for differentiation of benignancy and malignancy.
The following sonographic parameters were analyzed; 1) size of nodule, 2). boundary and margin of the nodule, 3) internal echoes, cystic or solid, 4) halo or calcification.
The results are as follows:
1. There was no difference in size and location of nodule and presence of intratumoral calcification.
2. Thyroid adenoma showed 54 cases (51.9%) of complete solid nodule and 50 cases (48.1%) of cystic change.
Especially complete cystic nodule and cyst with nodule pattens were all adenoma, and peripheral complete halo was helpful for differentiate adenoma form cancer.
3. Thyroid cancer showed 32 cases (86.5%) of complete solid nodule and rarely cystic cange (5 cases, 18.9%). The most common sonographic finding of thyroid cancer was hypoechoic solid nodule (17 cases, 45.9%). Comparing to adenoma, peripheral halo in thyroid cancer was uncommon, and thick, irregular and incomplete.
4. Preoperative ultraonographic diagnosis of thyroid nodule showed sensitivity 81.73%, specificity 65.9% and accuracy 78.01%.
